It has been dubbed the “Isle of Eight Flags” because eight separate flags have ruled over the territory: France, Spain, Great Britain, the Patriots of Amelia Island, the Green Cross of Florida, Mexico, the Confederate States of America, and the United States. Located in Nassau County, the remote island is 13 miles long and 4 miles wide. There are approximately 20,000 people on the island permanently.
The Nassau County School District runs the schools of Amelia Island. The district includes a few private Christian schools. Students can find higher education not far in Georgia at Valdosta State University or Brenau University. Jacksonville, within reasonable distance of Amelia Island, offers post-secondary schooling in Jacksonville University, Edward Waters College and Florida Community College.
Recreation There are many things to do on Amelia Island. Residents can visit the numerous beaches, go horseback riding, hiking, kayaking, canoing, swimming, fishing and much more. Fort Clinch State Park is a nice place to hike and bike. There are multiple festivals and special events throughout the year as well. One of the biggest events is the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival in Fernandina Beach. For music connoisseurs there is the Amelia Island Jazz Festival and the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival. The island also has a Concours d’Elegance and the Bausch & Lomb Tennis Championships. Major female tennis stars play this Tier II-tournament.
Golf There are six sites on Amelia Island at which to play golf. One venue, Fernandina Beach Golf Club, is public and open to anyone. Fernandina is a 27-hole club. The other five sites are The Golf Club at North Hampton (18 holes), Royal Amelia Golf Links (18), Golf Club of Amelia Island (18), Amelia Links (36), and Long Point (36).
Gated Communities The several gated communities on and around Amelia Island offer lots of activities, including golf. Amelia Island Plantation is a huge, 1,350-acre community on the oceanfront. Amelia National Golf & Country Club on Fernandina Beach is 215 acres and covered in forest. Amelia Island also boasts the 740-acre North Hampton golf community and the 450-acre Summer Beach.
In the Amelia Island market there were a total of 18 sales in August 2009. The average selling price for that period was $614,000 and the median selling price was $275,000. There were 43 new listings and 30 new contracts, which indicates an up tick in the market!
