Amelia Island is the northernmost island of Florida and the southernmost of the Sea Islands. It has been dubbed the “Isle of Eight Flags” because eight separate flags have ruled over the territory: France, Spain, Great Britain, the Patriots of Amelia Island, the Green Cross of Florida, Mexico, the Confederate States of America, and the United States. Located in Nassau County, the remote island is 13 miles long and 4 miles wide. There are approximately 20,000 people on the island permanently.
